Punctuation
- Dashes can be used to show a pause or an additional thought, example: "The newspaper reported that the hostages had been released - most of them French."
- Commas used in a list separate items with a comma before the "and," example: "Ali used red, green and yellow."
- Quotation marks are for direct speech. Pay attention to the placement of the quotation marks, example: "Ayman said, "Where did you spend your holiday, Ali?"
- Question marks are placed at the end of a direct question, example: "Who is the responsible?" they asked.
- Full stops can be used to separate sentences.
- Exclamation marks can be used after an exclamation.
Grammar
- Apostrophes are used to mark the possessive case of nouns and to mark contractions.
- Subject-Verb Agreement The verb must agree with its subject in number, this means that a singular subject takes a singular verb while a plural subject takes a plural verb.
- Pronoun Case Pronouns change form depending on their function in a sentence. "The cat chased the ball." (subject) vs "The ball rolled towards it." (object).
- Commas can be used after introductory phrases, before conjunctions joining independent clauses, and to separate items in a list.
