Newton's 2nd Law of Motion

The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the force acting on it and inversely proportional to its mass.

Potential Energy

Energy that is stored due to an object's position or configuration.

Conduction

Transfer of thermal energy through direct contact between materials.

Translucent

An object that transmits light but scatters it, making objects behind it appear blurry.

Study Notes

Grade 8 Matter

  • Gas: Has no definite shape or volume.
  • Liquid: Takes the shape of its container, has no definite shape, but does have a definite volume. Molecules are loosely packed in comparison to solids.
  • Water Vaporization: Evaporation or boiling is the process by which liquid water becomes water vapor (gas).
  • Water Freezing/Melting: Freezing is the process by which liquid water converts to ice (solid), and melting is the opposite change from ice to liquid water.
  • Matter: Composed of particles.
  • Phases of Matter: Solid, liquid, gas. Not Solution.

Grade 8 Heat Transfer

  • Heat Transfer: Thermal energy always moves from a higher temperature to a lower temperature.
  • Examples of Heat Transfer: Conduction (touching), convection (movement of fluids), radiation (through space).
  • Burning Hand: Conduction.

Grade 8 Forces and Motion

  • Speed: How fast an object is moving, regardless of direction.
  • Force: A push or pull, capable of changing motion. It is an interaction between two or more objects. Forces cause motion, start stationary objects moving, stop moving objects and are interactions between two or more objects.
  • Net Force: The sum of all forces acting on an object.
  • Newton's First Law: If the net force on an object is zero, the object will remain at rest or move in a straight line with constant speed.
  • Newton's Second Law: The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the net force acting on it and inversely proportional to its mass.
  • Newton's Third Law: When one object exerts a force on another, the second object exerts an equal and opposite force on the first.
  • Weight: A measure of the gravitational force on an object.
  • Reference Point: A place or object used to determine if an object is in motion.
  • Constant Speed: Maintains a constant velocity.
  • Acceleration: Change in velocity

Grade 8 Waves and Sound

  • Wavelength: The distance between one point on a compression and the corresponding point on the next compression in a sound wave.
  • Frequency and Wavelength: If the frequency of a wave decreases, its wavelength increases (and vice-versa).
  • Wave types: Transverse (water waves) and longitudinal.

Grade 8 Simple Machines

  • Fixed Pulley: Changes the direction of the input force.
  • Wheel and Axle: A simple machine.
  • Second-Class Lever: A simple machine. Examples include wheelbarrow, nutcracker.

Grade 8 Energy and Momentum

  • Potential Energy: Stored energy.
  • Kinetic Energy: Energy of matter in motion.
  • Heat energy: Transformation during motion.
  • Law of Conservation of Energy: Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed.

Grade 8 Magnetism and Electricity

  • Circuit: A path for electricity.
  • Single cell: Parts of circuits such as components.
