Grade 5 English Textbook: Unit 1

General Information

• This is an English textbook for compulsory education, reviewed and approved by the Ministry of Education in 2013.
• It's designed for fifth-grade students starting from the third grade level.
• It's published by Yilin Education Press.

Unit 1: We Love Nature

• The first lesson is about Planting Trees.
• Planting trees involves digging a hole, putting a tree in the hole, putting the earth back, and watering it well.
• Some activities include watching TV, singing, swimming, and having breakfast.
• Vocabulary includes flying kites, doing homework, having a picnic, and playing ping-pong.
• Actions include cleaning the house and watering the flowers.
• Tree-planting Day is a holiday promoting tree planting.
• It is celebrated on March 12th in China, and March 31st in France.
• In Japan, Tree-planting Day is on April 3rd.
• In New Zealand, it's on the first Wednesday in August.
• In Australia, it's on the first Friday in May.

Unit 2: Talking About Squirrels

• Lesson 2 covers talking about squirrels.
• Vocabulary related to objects and animals in a picture: a house, an orange, flowers, tortoise, duck, ducklings, dogs, trees, and birds.
• Dialogue asks if there are any birds in the tree.
• A listening activity needs identifying true and false statements.
• There is a chant about mice.

Unit 3: Lesson 3: A Book about Animals

• Animals live in different habitats.
• Bears in the forest, giraffes in grassland, sharks in the sea, camels in the desert, and tigers in the mountains.
• The dialogue is about where the different animals live.
• They can perform the actions of running, swimming, jumping, climbing trees and building nests
• A partner interview activity about names, places of living and what they can do
• Guessing various animals from clues like "It can run fast"

Unit 2: Four Seasons

• Lesson 1 introduces seasons and clothes.
• Spring is warm, and people wear shirts and trousers.
• Summer is hot, with T-shirts and skirts.
• Autumn is cool, so people wear sweaters and jeans.
• Winter is cold, and coats and caps are worn.
• British English terms: mum, trousers, autumn, shop, colour, sweets, can, ground floor, and zip code.
• American English equivalents: mom, pants, fall, store, color, candies, tin, first floor, and post code.
• Students should describe what's in a washing machine
• Describing a friend from description, then drawing and writing about your partner.
• Time/seasons are grouped up with rhyming words

Unit 2: Lesson 2: Seasons and Months

• Seasons are linked to months.
• Spring is from March to May; summer is from June to August.
• Autumn is from September to November; winter is from December to February.
• In Spring, plants grow and birds sing, and it is warm out
• For Autumn the wind blows, and it is cool and leaves turn yellow.
• Summer is hot
• It snows in Winter
• Sunny likes grass, but dislikes apples
• A song about the months and the names of the months in lyrical form: January, Feb, March, April, May, August, September etc.

Unit 2: Lesson 3: Seasons and Culture

• A national holiday celebrated mainly in Britain, Easter celebrates the spring.
• Easter symbols consist of eggs and chicks which are made of chocolate
• The dragon boat festival consists of eating Zongzi and racing dragon boats on the Chinese Lunar calender
• A lesson on using punctuation, specifically the full stop, and question mark
• A section on using the words in a box to finish the sentences
• Another section has a self assessment to see how well learned the information was learned

###Unit 3: A Birthday Party

• Lesson 1 is titled coming to my Party
• Some activities include completing puzzles and answering questions
• Lesson 2 is titled buying a present
• Prices are taught in Yuan, and a short skit is created about buying it
• A stupid machine, is a robot who can cleam, and a exercise where children can learn the purpose of the object
• Rhyming activities with the correct sentences
• New games and vocabulary are found below in the words list section

Unit 3: Lesson 3

• Tingting is lighting the candles
• Make a wish and blow out the candles
• If too late, must return home
• Remember what is taught; it is important to have no pain and no gain. A lesson to be learned.
• A learning activity is about playing the song "Its your birthday" to your loved ones and family as a great gesture
