Good Samaritan Law
- Provides legal protection for individuals offering reasonable assistance to those injured, ill, or incapacitated.
- In the UAE, approximately 78% of the public is willing to assist someone in need due to this law.
- Introduced in November 2020, making the UAE the first Arab nation to pass the Good Samaritan law, encouraging bystanders to provide emergency medical aid without fear of legal repercussions.
Types of Bleeding
-
External Bleeding: Blood flows from an open wound, can be further classified into three types:
- Capillary Bleeding: Oozing from capillaries; usually minor and can stop on its own.
- Venous Bleeding: Steady flow of dark red blood; easier to control than arterial bleeding.
- Arterial Bleeding: Spurting bright red blood; a severe type as it can lead to significant blood loss quickly.
-
Internal Bleeding: Blood loss that occurs inside the body, often difficult to detect; skin remains intact and may appear bluish or greyish.
Symptoms of Bleeding
- Signs may include:
- Visible wound with or without embedded object.
- Surface pain and bruising.
- Loss of normal function in the affected area.
- Pale and cold skin.
Care for External Bleeding
- Apply firm pressure on the wound with a sterile or clean pad.
- If possible, raise the injured area to reduce blood flow.
- Do not remove embedded foreign objects; instead, pad around it and secure with a bandage.
- Keep the patient at rest for comfort and to help control bleeding.
- Seek medical assistance promptly if the injury is severe or if the patient feels unwell.
Internal Bleeding Signs
- May present as:
- Vomitus with bright red blood or blood in stool.
- Bruises on the lower chest and rigid abdomen.
- Black, tarry stools indicating digested blood.
Types of Open Wounds
- Abrasion: Top layer of skin scraped off, usually painful due to exposed nerve endings.
- Laceration: Jagged cuts caused by a tearing force; often more complex than abrasions.
- Incision: Smooth-edged cuts resembling surgical wounds, with bleeding dependent on depth and location.
- Puncture: Deep, narrow wounds; may involve damage to underlying organs.
- Avulsion: Skin or tissue torn loose or completely removed; can bleed heavily.
- Amputation: Involves the severing of a body part like a finger or limb.
Cautions for First Aid
- Avoid direct contact with blood; use protective gear such as gloves.
- Do not apply direct pressure on eye injuries or remove blood-soaked dressings; instead, add more padding.
- Thoroughly wash hands post-care to prevent infection.
