GIMP Layers
GIMP's layered workspace is one of its most powerful features. It allows you to work with multiple images at the same time and gives you a high level of control over your compositions. Here's how it works:
Creating Layers
You can create layers by selecting an image or part of an image and then choosing Layer > New from Selection. Alternatively, you can use the shortcut Ctrl+Shift+N (Cmd+Opt+N on macOS). You can also duplicate layers using the Duplicate Layer option under Layer, which creates a new layer that is a copy of the original one.
Changing Opacity and Blend Modes
GIMP layers have opacity settings for each layer. This means you can mix the layers' colors together while keeping them separate. The blend modes determine how the colors interact. They are very powerful tools for creating unique effects. To change these settings, go to the Layer menu, select Mode, and pick what you want.
Locking Layers
Locking a layer prevents changes to its pixels. To do this, right-click on the layer and select Lock Layer or press Alt+L. When the lock icon is visible on the layer, you can't edit its pixels. You can unlock layers by clicking on the lock again.
Changing Layer Order
To change the order of the layers, grab the layer and drag it to the desired position. The top layer will appear in front and the bottom layer will appear behind other layers unless they are locked.
Merging Layers
Merging combines all selected layers into one new layer, discarding the others. To do this, select the layers you want to merge, right-click, and choose Merge Layers. You can also use the shortcut Ctrl+E (Cmd+E on macOS).
Layer Masks
A layer mask is a grayscale image that you can use to control which parts of an image are visible and which aren't. You can create a layer mask by going to the Layers dialog, clicking on the mask icon at the bottom right, and painting on it with the Brush Tool.
Layer Groups
Layer groups are a way to organize your layers. They can be useful when you have a lot of layers and want to keep them organized. To create a layer group, select the layers you want to group, right-click, and choose Group Layers. The layers will be arranged inside the group, and you can rearrange them by dragging them within the group. To ungroup layers, right-click on the group and choose Ungroup Layers.
Hiding and Showing Layers
You can hide and show layers by clicking on the eye icon next to each layer. This allows you to see the effect of turning layers on and off. If you want to hide all layers except one, you can use the shortcut Ctrl+H (Cmd+H on macOS).
Layers vs. Channels
Layers and channels are different concepts in GIMP. Layers are used for editing images, while channels are used for image processing.
In conclusion, GIMP's layers are a powerful tool for creating and editing images. They allow you to work with multiple images at the same time, make selective changes, and create complex compositions. The layer groups feature is particularly useful for managing large projects with many layers.
