    Greek Creation Story

    • The story of how the world began is based on two poems, Theogony and Works and Days, by Hesiod, an ancient Greek poet.
    • Hesiod's version of the creation story suggests that Pandora, the first woman, is responsible for much trouble.
    • Before Hesiod, Pandora was known as a generous Earth goddess in oral traditions, Her name means "gift giver".
    • The creation story begins with Chaos, endless nothingness.
    • From Chaos came Gaia (Earth), Eros (love), Tartarus (the underworld), Erebus (darkness), and Nyx (night).
    • Gaia is the mother of Uranus (sky/the heavens), who was her equal and also created the mountains and seas.
    • The union of Gaia and Uranus, brought together by Eros, created the Titans, the first immortal beings.
    • There were six male and six female Titans, including Cronos (time/harvest) and Rhea (fertility).
    • Uranus made the Titans stay hidden inside Gaia until she devised a plan for them to escape.
    • Cronos freed the Titans by separating Uranus and Gaia and throwing part of Uranus's body into the sea.
    • This is how Aphrodite (love/beauty) came to be.
    • Cronus was told by Uranus that one of his children would trick him one day.
    • Cronos became the leader of the gods with his sister and wife, Rhea.
    • He was afraid of what Uranus had warned about and ate every baby Rhea had.
    • Rhea hated this and with help from her parents, Gaia and Uranus, tricked Cronus by giving him a rock disguised as a baby when Zeus (sky/weather) was born.
    • Zeus grew up, saved Rhea's other children and the rock, and challenged Cronus to a fight for leadership.
    • Zeus and his siblings, the Olympians, won, and the Titans were imprisoned in the underworld.
    • Zeus was also afraid that his child would trick him and ate his first wife, Metis, when she was about to give birth to Athena (wisdom/justice).
    • Metis and Athena caused Zeus misery until Athena burst from his head, fully grown and ready for war.
    • Zeus overcame all challenges to his power and remained the ruler of Mount Olympus, home of the gods.
    • Prometheus, Zeus's cousin, is credited with creating man from mud, while Athena, Zeus's daughter, brought life to the mud figure.
    • Humans lived without work or sickness for a while.
    • Prometheus tricked Zeus by stealing fire for humankind.
    • Zeus, in retaliation, created Pandora, the first woman, to punish Prometheus's creation.
    • Zeus gave Pandora a box and warned her never to open it.
    • Pandora's curiosity led her to open the box, releasing evil upon the world and humankind.
    • Zeus told Pandora to close the box, leaving only hope inside.

    Pandora's box

    • The story of Pandora's box highlights the consequences of curiosity and the potential for evil in the world.
    • While Pandora did not intentionally release the evil, her actions brought its consequences upon humanity.
