Study Notes
Continental Drift Theory
- Alfred Wegener proposed the theory of continental drift
- The theory states that all continents were once joined together in a supercontinent called Pangaea
Plate Tectonics Theory
- Plates of the Earth's crust and upper mantle are called lithospheric plates
- These plates float on the asthenosphere, a semi-molten layer within the mantle.
- Convection currents in the mantle drive the movement of the lithospheric plates.
Plate Boundaries
- Divergent boundaries occur where two plates move apart
- Convergent boundaries occur where two plates collide.
- Transform fault boundaries occur where two plates slide past each other horizontally.
Relative Dating
- Used to determine the relative age of rocks and fossils
- Relies on the following principles
- Superposition - younger rocks lie on top of older rocks
- Original horizontality - sedimentary rocks are originally deposited horizontally
- Cross-cutting relationships - any feature that cuts across another feature must be younger
- Unconformities - gaps in the geologic record
Absolute Dating
- Used to determine the numerical age of rocks and fossils.
- Relies on the decay of unstable radioactive isotopes (radioactive elements)
Geologic Time Scale
- Divides Earth's history into eons, eras, periods, and epochs
- The current epoch is the Holocene, which belongs to the Quaternary period, Cenozoic era, and Phanerozoic eon.
Paleozoic Era
- The Paleozoic era is divided into seven periods:
- Cambrian
- Ordovician
- Silurian
- Devonian
- Mississippian
- Pennsylvanian
- Permian
Mesozoic Era
- The Mesozoic era is divided into three periods:
- Triassic
- Jurassic
- Cretaceous
