Study Notes

Part 1: Environment and Climate

  • Relief Types - Mountains: Mountain ranges (e.g., Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians) create diverse climates due to altitude. Higher altitudes have cooler temps and orographic precipitation, leading to lush vegetation on windward slopes and arid conditions on leeward slopes.
  • Mountains - Human Activity: Serve as natural borders, impacting tourism (ski resorts), and provide crucial water resources from glaciers and snowmelt. Steep terrain limits agriculture and urban development. Mountain regions support crucial tourism and provide fresh water resources.
  • Relief Types - Plains: Plains have moderate climates with less elevation variation and no major airflow disruptions. Mild winters, warm summers and moderate rainfall are typical, making them suitable for farming. North European Plain is a prime example, stretching from France to Russia. Plains are excellent for agricultural activities due to the flat terrain. Plains support a large population due to arable land.
  • Plains - Human Activity: Highly populated due to flat terrain, supporting agriculture and large cities (e.g., Paris, Berlin, Warsaw). Plains are ideal for agriculture and settlement.
  • Relief Types - Plateaus: Plateaus (e.g., Central Russian and Anatolian Plateaus) have continental climates, characterized by cold winters, hot summers, limited precipitation, but with significant temperature fluctuations. Aridity can be a limiting factor for agriculture. Plateaus have unique continental climates. Plateaus are regions with limited population and considerable water scarcity.
  • Plateaus - Human Activity: Often sparsely populated due to harsher conditions. However, some nomadic herding cultures and mining/resource extraction activities occur. Tibetan Plateau is an example.
  • Relief Types - Valleys: Valleys experience milder temperatures than surrounding areas due to their sheltered nature. They are ideal for agriculture and lead to dense settlements. These areas are also key transportation routes. (e.g., Rhine Valley or the Po Valley in Italy) Valleys are excellent locations for farming, population growth, and transportation.

Climate Types

  • Tropical Climate: Year-round temperatures between 25-30°C, high rainfall (2,000-3,000 mm/year). Located near the equator, abundant rainfall affects seasonality. Ideal for tropical crops (e.g., cocoa, coffee, rubber). Tropical storms like hurricanes are possible in coastal regions. Tropical climates are characterized by consistent warm temperatures and heavy rainfall.
  • Arid Climate: Extreme temperature variations with hot summers and cold winters, very low rainfall (less than 250 mm/year). Found at 20°-30° latitudes, where high pressure zones limit rainfall. Mining and agriculture (in oases) are possible activities. Sahara Desert is a prime example. Arid climates are characterized by infrequent and low precipitation, leading to extremely dry conditions.
  • Temperate Climate: Moderate temperatures (4°C-18°C), moderate rainfall distributed throughout the year. Located between 30° and 60° latitude, influenced by westerlies. Supports agriculture (grains, fruits) and livestock farming. Coastal areas have milder winters and warmer summers. Temperate climates offer moderate temperatures, rainfall, and suitable conditions for diverse agricultural activities.
  • Continental Climate: Extreme seasonal variations with very cold winters (often below -20°C) and hot summers (above 30°C), moderate rainfall, concentrated mostly in summer months. Located further inland. Supports grain and livestock farming. Day-night temperature differences are often quite extreme. Continental climates have a wide variation in temperatures throughout the year.
  • Polar Climate: Temperatures are generally below freezing and rainfall is low, mostly in the form of snow. Located near the poles with very limited human activities beyond scientific research and resource extraction. Suitable conditions for scientific research and resource extraction. Polar climates are characterized by extreme cold and minimal precipitation.
