- The Earth's surface is made up of water and land, with about 3/4 of the surface covered by water and 1/4 by land.
Water on Earth's Surface
- Most of Earth's water is salt water, found in oceans and seas.
- Fresh water is found in lakes, rivers, and streams.
- Only a very small amount of all the water on Earth is fresh water.
- Only a tiny amount of this fresh water is usable by living things.
- The rest of the fresh water is unavailable, frozen in huge masses of ice called glaciers.
Landforms
- A landform is a part of Earth's surface that has a certain shape and is formed naturally.
- Types of landforms include mountains, valleys, plateaus, and plains.
Mountains
- A mountain is a raised part of the land, usually with steep sides, that rises above the area around it.
- Mountains can be high, rocky, and topped with snow, or lower and covered with trees.
Valleys
- A valley is a low area surrounded by mountains.
