Heredity and Variation
Heredity is the transmission of genetic information from one generation to another through reproduction. It's what makes you look like your parents and why you might have their eye color, hair type, or other physical features. Heredity is also responsible for traits that don't affect appearance, such as whether someone has an inherited predisposition to heart disease.
Variation, on the other hand, refers to differences between living things. These can stem from genetic variations within a species, which come about when errors occur during DNA replication. Environmental factors, such as exposure to radiation, heat, or chemicals, can also produce mutations that contribute to variation among individuals. In humans, this could mean naturally occurring differences in height, skin tone, and susceptibility to certain diseases.
The Basics of Genetics
Each person's set of genes comes from two sources: the sperm and egg cells contributed by their biological parents. In most cases, offspring inherit half of their genetic material from each parent. This process occurs during the production of sex cells called gametes, where chromosomes containing all genetic information are halved.
Sometimes, the process leading up to fertilization can introduce small changes into the gene sequence, such as single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). However, these changes are often harmless, with only some resulting in alterations to proteins or other molecules that may lead to a new trait or condition.
Types of Gene Variations

However, some gene variants can increase an individual's risk of developing specific diseases if they interact negatively with certain environmental conditions or lifestyle choices. For example, a gene variant associated with a higher risk of breast cancer may become even more dangerous because the person doesn't exercise regularly and eats poorly.
Understanding heredity and variation helps researchers develop diagnostic tests and potential treatments for various diseases, including cancer, diabetes, and neurological disorders. By studying the relationship between human genetics and disease, scientists hope to make strides in improving public health.
