    Heredity is the process by which genes pass on their genetic material to offspring through reproduction. This means any information carried on chromosomes is passed down from parent to child, creating similarities between family members—a concept known as resemblance. For example, if you have blue eyes and your parents had brown eyes, there's likely a gene responsible for this trait that was transferred to you via your mother carrying it on one of her two copies of chromosome 15 and your father did not carry it. Thus, heredity allows us to trace certain traits back generations, making it possible to understand more about ourselves and where we came from.

    The genetic code is composed of four chemical building blocks called nucleotides, represented by the letters A, T, G, and C. These nucleotides pair up in sets of three called codons, which form the genetic code. Each codon specifies an amino acid, with some codons signaling the end of a sequence, causing ribosomes (the cellular machines) to stop assembling a new chain of amino acids into a protein molecule.
