Study Notes
General Overview of Motor Starters
- Motor starters function to safely start and stop motors while providing overload protection.
- Can be manual or automatic with various operating functions beyond just start/stop.
- Additional functions include reversing operation, reduced voltage starting, speed control, sequencing control, remote operation, and enhanced operator safety.
Across-the-Line Magnetic Starter
- A common motor starter controlling three-phase motors.
- Utilizes an electromagnet to operate contacts for electrical circuit control.
- Motors started with full line voltage, termed "across-the-line."
Basic Construction of Magnetic Starters
- Composed of two main parts: a contactor and an overload relay (OLR).
- The contactor initiates stop/start actions; the OLR provides protection during operation.
Contactor Functionality
- Two types: clapper type and vertical lift type.
- Stationary contacts in series with the motor line.
- Energizing the coil attracts the armature, closing normally open contacts; de-energizing releases the armature, opening contacts.
Control Circuit Operation
- The control circuit has a three-wire setup allowing various switches (e.g., float, pressure, temperature).
- Momentary push-button controls available: STOP (normally closed) and START (normally open).
- Pressing the START button energizes the coil, maintaining power through a seal-in contact. Releasing START does not interrupt power until an overload or STOP is activated.
Overload Relay (OLR)
- OLR consists of two parts: a heater element (in series with the motor line) and a normally closed auxiliary contact (in series with the contactor coil).
- Code requirement mandates OLR protection for each line in a three-phase setup.
- Selection of heater must align with the motor's nameplate current rating.
Tripping and Resetting OLR
- Tripped OLR indicated by flags, disks, or plungers; requires identifying overload causes before resetting.
- Resetting involves allowing OLR to cool down.
Power Circuit Components
- Typical power circuit includes disconnect switch, overcurrent protection, motor connections, and OLR heaters.
- Control circuits are typically powered from the three-phase supply to the motor.
Operating from Multiple Locations
- Motors can be controlled from multiple locations using multiple STOP/START buttons.
- Buttons are wired such that STOP buttons are in series and START buttons in parallel.
Rating of Starters and Contactors
- Rated by the Electrical Equipment Manufacturers' Association of Canada (EEMAC).
- Ratings provided for standard sizes based on horsepower; sizes range from 00 (2 hp max) to 8 (900 hp max).
Pilot Lights
- Used for remote indication of motor operational status, connected in parallel with the starter coil.
Summary of Functions and Controls
- Motor controllers can provide reduced voltage start, reversing, speed control, and other operational capabilities.
- Safety features include under-voltage protection and remote operation capabilities.
