Read the following passage and answer the item that follow the passage. Your answers to these items should be based on the passage only.
Passage I
The term public service is old-fashioned, but still useful. A public service is an activity whose purpose is to meet the needs of its customers, but in which these needs cannot appropriately be met by the ordinary process of profit-making firms operating in a competitive market. Perhaps because competition is impossible, as in electricity transmission and distribution. Perhaps because the service is intrinsically uneconomic, as with the railways. Perhaps because there is a strong social interest in the nature and quality of the output, as in education or water supply. Or perhaps because crude commercial motivations are incompatible with the ethos that customers expect from the service, as in health.

General Instructions
- Begin the examination only when instructed
- Verify the test booklet for missing or damaged pages and request a replacement if needed
- An OMR answer sheet is used to record answers, ensure to accurately fill in your roll number and test booklet series (A, B, C, or D) to avoid rejection
- Write only your roll number in the designated space on the test booklet, and do not write anything else on it
- This test booklet contains 50 questions in both English and Hindi
- Each question has four response options, select the one you consider the best
- Mark all answers on the separate answer sheet provided, and refer to the instructions given there
- All questions carry equal marks
- Before answering questions, fill in certain details on the answer sheet as per the instructions on your admission certificate
- Submit only the answer sheet to the invigilator upon completion of the examination, and you are allowed to take the test booklet with you
- Blank sheets for rough work are attached at the end of the test booklet
Negative Marking
- A penalty mark applies for incorrect answers in objective question papers
- For every question with four alternatives, one-third of the marks assigned to the question will be deducted for a wrong answer
- If a candidate provides more than one answer, it will be considered a wrong answer, and the penalty will be applied accordingly, even if one of the answers is correct
- No penalty is applied if a question is left unattempted, where the candidate does not provide an answer
Ecosystems and Ecology

- Water molds, mushrooms and diatoms are primarily classified as saprotrophs
- In the 1970s, Arne Naess advocated that humans are not more significant than other species, emphasizing equal importance for all life on Earth in the environmental philosophy of Deep Ecology

Ecology and Environmental Principles
- Coccolithophores, cyanobacteria, and pteropods are primary producers in the food chain of an ecosystem
- Trees are unable to replace grasses in grasslands due to water limits and fire
- The rate of biomagnification will increase in toxic materials highly soluble in water while having long biological half-life
- Gross Primary productivity is the rate of production of organic matter during photosynthesis
- A community refers to all populations of different species that live in the same area and interact with one another
- An ecologically distinct area exhibits more biodiversity
- A gradual change of environmental conditions across ecosystems is termed an Ecocline
Chemical Cycles
- Phosphorous cycles through sedimentation in the ground
- Human interference, such as mining phosphate rocks, modifies the naturally slow Phosphorous cycle
Water Cycle
- Transpiration enables plants to contribute to cloud formation
- Rainfall contributes in maintenance of underground water level
- Surface water can be connected to ground water
Lok Sabha and Ecology
- Form 17C is associated with recording the total number of votes cast in a polling station
- Wallace Line marked flora and fauna distribution between between Asia and Australia
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
- The IAEA does not require it's members to sign and ratify the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) as a condition of membership
Hibernation
- Hibernation is a state of reduced metabolic activity during harsh environmental conditions, not just cold winters
- Animals in hibernation see a drop in body temperature
Sovereign Green Bonds (India)
- It's incorrect that Sovereign Green bonds offer non-taxable capital gains and interest
Representation of the People Act, 1951
- Under the Representation of the People Act, 1951, an election petition challenging the election of a Member of Parliament or State Legislature can be filed before High Court

- The Maldhari community is the primary inhabitants of the Banni Grassland in India, which prominently features a huge freshwater lake
- Nektons are heterotrophic creatures with swimming capabilities that are largely independent
Eutrophication
- Lakes undergoing Eutrophication result in hydrogen sulfide production, oxygen level depletion, loss of biodiversity and greenhouse gas emission.

- Represents the increase over change in concentration in carbon dioxide in Earth's atmosphere
Millennium Ecosystem Assessment
- Climate regulation, food production, water purification, raw materials like timber, and recreational use are all provisioning services of the ecosystem
NaaS (Network as a Service)
- Statement -I and Statement -II are interconnected and have a similar function
