General Chemistry
Stoichiometry
Stoichiometry is the branch of chemistry that deals with calculating the quantities of reactants and products involved in a chemical reaction. It involves understanding the coefficients of a chemical equation and how they relate to the actual masses or volumes of reactants and products. Key concepts within stoichiometry include limiting reactant, balanced equations, and stoichiometric calculations. The atomic mass unit is used to express the relative molecular weight of elements and compounds.
Balanced Equations
Balancing a chemical equation means making sure all atoms are accounted for on both sides of the equation. This process helps determine the stoichiometry of a system, which is crucial when trying to calculate quantities of reactants and products.
Limiting Reactant
In a limiting reactant calculation, you identify which reagent will run out first based on the stoichiometry of the reaction between two or more reactants. For example, if two molecules of A react with one molecule of B to form C, and you start with 6 moles of B and only enough A to make 4 moles of C, then B is the limiting reactant (B runs out first).
Acids and Bases
Acids and bases play a significant role in general chemistry. An acid is any compound that donates a proton (H+) to another base, while a base is any compound that accepts a proton from an acid. The pH scale measures the concentration of hydrogen ions (H+) and ranges from 0 to 14, where 7 is neutral, less than 7 indicates an acidic solution, and more than 7 indicates a basic solution.
Chemical Bonding
Chemical bonding refers to the forces between atoms that create a stable structure known as a molecule. There are three main types of chemical bonds: ionic, covalent, and metallic. Ionic bonds involve the transfer of electrons between metals and nonmetals, creating charged particles called ions. Covalent bonds occur when atoms share electrons to achieve full outer shells (octets), forming multiple bonds like double or triple bonds. Metallic bonds occur in transition metal crystals, where free electrons move among metal atoms and are shared by many neighboring atoms.
