Study Notes

Gastrointestinal Hormones

Secretin

  • Discovered as the first gastrointestinal hormone
  • Produced by "S" cells in the duodenum's mucosa
  • Released in response to acidic gastric juice entering the duodenum
  • Has a mild effect on the motility of the GI tract
  • Stimulates pancreatic secretion of bicarbonate to neutralize acid in the small intestine

Gastric Inhibitory Peptide (GIP)

  • Secreted by the upper small intestine's mucosa
  • Mainly responds to fatty acids and amino acids
  • Also responds to carbohydrates, but to a lesser extent
  • Decreases motor activity in the stomach
  • Slows the emptying of gastric contents into the duodenum to prevent overloading the small intestine with food

Motilin

  • Released by the upper duodenum during fasting
  • Only function is to increase GI motility
  • Released cyclically, stimulating waves of motility
  • Involved in inter digestive myoelectric complexes that move through the stomach and small intestine every 90 minutes
  • Inhibited after ingestion, but the mechanisms are unknown
