Ganita – Algebra

Gāṇit is Sanskrit word which translates into English as 'mathematics'. It has been a subject of study since ancient times in India, with its earliest mention being found in the Rigveda. One of the most important branches within gāṇit is algebra. This branch of mathematics deals with generalization and abstraction from specific numbers to variables, allowing us to perform mathematical operations using letters instead of actual numerical values.

The concept of algebra was first introduced by al-Khwarizmi in his book entitled al-Kitab al-mukhtasar fi hisab al-jabr wa'l-muqabala, commonly known as Al-Jabr wa'l-Muqabala. In this work, he discussed several methods of solving quadratic equations and also coined the terms used in algebra today: Al-Jabr meaning restoring or completion, and Muquabala meaning equating or sharing. These two concepts were fundamental in developing the basic principles of algebraic manipulation.

In modern times, algebra relies heavily on abstract symbols like x and y, where each letter stands for an unknown quantity. Different rules govern how these symbols can be combined together, such as addition, multiplication, division, etc. By applying these rules properly, we can solve problems involving complex quantities without having any knowledge of their exact magnitudes. For example, if you have an equation like (x + 8 = 9), it doesn't matter what number goes inside (x) because all that matters is getting rid of the constant term so that only one variable remains on either side of the equals sign.

Although many people associate algebra with high school math classes focused on solving polynomial equations and quadratic relations, there actually exists some very advanced types of algebra too - namely Abstract Algebra. At its core, Abstract Algebra studies structures called groups, rings, fields, vector spaces, modules, lattices, monoids, categories, and more; each type of structure has its own set of properties and operations unique to it.
