What are the primary sex organs in males and females that produce gametes?

The testis in the males and the ovaries in the females are the primary sex organs that produce gametes.

What is the process called by which the spermatids are transformed into spermatozoa (sperms)?

The process by which spermatids are transformed into spermatozoa (sperms) is called spermiogenesis.

What is the number of chromosomes in the secondary spermatocytes formed after the first meiotic division?

The secondary spermatocytes have 23 chromosomes each.

What is the process called by which the immature male germ cells (spermatogonia) produce sperms?

The process by which spermatogonia produce sperms is called spermatogenesis.

What is the process called by which the sperm heads become embedded in the Sertoli cells and are finally released from the seminiferous tubules?

The process by which the sperm heads become embedded in the Sertoli cells and are finally released from the seminiferous tubules is called spermiation.

What is the number of chromosomes in the spermatids formed after the second meiotic division?

The spermatids have 23 chromosomes each.

Study Notes

Gametogenesis

  • Primary sex organs (testis in males and ovaries in females) produce gametes (sperms and ovum) through gametogenesis.
  • In testis, spermatogenesis begins at puberty, where immature male germ cells (spermatogonia) produce sperms.

Spermatogenesis

  • Spermatogonia multiply by mitotic division and increase in numbers on the inside wall of seminiferous tubules.
  • Each spermatogonium is diploid and contains 46 chromosomes.
  • Primary spermatocytes undergo meiosis, completing the first meiotic division (reduction division) to form two equal, haploid cells called secondary spermatocytes with 23 chromosomes each.
  • Secondary spermatocytes undergo the second meiotic division to produce four equal, haploid spermatids.

Spermatid Formation

  • Spermatids have 23 chromosomes each.
  • Spermatids are transformed into spermatozoa (sperms) by the process of spermiogenesis.

Sperm Release

  • After spermiogenesis, sperm heads become embedded in Sertoli cells.
  • Sperm are finally released from the seminiferous tubules by the process of spermiation.

Test your knowledge on the process of gametogenesis and spermatogenesis in males. Learn about the production of sperms from spermatogonia in the testis, including the stages of mitotic division and chromosome count.
