GAMABA Award
- Awarded to Filipinos who excel in preserving, practicing, and promoting traditional Filipino folk arts
- Formalized in 1992 through Republic Act No. 7355 (Manlilikha ng Bayan Act)
- National Commission for Culture and the Arts oversees implementation
- Aims to transfer skills to future generations and promote the crafts locally and globally
Criteria for GAMABA Award
- Citizen of Filipino Indigenous/Traditional Community: Must be a Filipino citizen or a group of citizens from an indigenous or traditional cultural community in the Philippines
- Engaged in Traditional Art: Must be engaged in a traditional Filipino art form, including folk architecture, maritime transport, weaving, carving, performing arts, literature, graphic and plastic arts, ornament, textile art, pottery, and others
- 50+ Years of Experience: Must be engaged in the tradition/craft for at least 50 years and documentation
- Superior Art Quality: Must have produced outstanding artistic works with a high quality
- Mastery of Skills and Materials: Must be recognized as a master artisan, showing mastery of traditional tools and materials within their community
- Transmission of Skills: Must have passed on or be in the process of passing on traditional skills and knowledge to other members of their community. This may include teaching.
- Inability to Teach Due to Age or Infirmity: If the candidate is unable to teach due to age or infirmity must have created a significant body of work and contributed to their artistic tradition in their community; be recognized as a master of his/her craft and admired for character and integrity in community.
