Study Notes
Gait Analysis
- Gait analysis involves kinematics, kinetics, distance and time variables, external forces, measurement of joint angles, internal forces, and determinants of gait.
Distance Variables
- Step length: linear distance from right heel to successive left heel, approximately 70.5 cm
- Stride length: linear distance from right heel to successive right heel, approximately 141 cm
- Stride width: horizontal distance between midpoint of one heel to another heel, approximately 8 cm (range: 2.5-12.5 cm)
- Foot angle (degree of toe out): angle between line of progression and line passing from center of heel to 2nd toe, approximately 7-10°
Time Variables
- Cadence: number of steps per minute, approximately 113 steps/min
- Speed: distance covered per unit time, approximately 1.2 m/sec (or 82 m/min)
- Step, stride, stance, swing, single limb, and double limb are all related to time variables
Calculations
- Cadence = Number of steps / minute
- Speed = Distance covered / time
- Stride time = GC time = 0.8 sec
- Swing time = 0.8 - 0.3 = 0.5 sec
- Float period = 0.5 * 20/100 = 0.1 sec
