Organic chemicals can be classified into several broad categories depending on their composition, structure, and functionality: hydrocarbons, alcohols, ethers, halides, carboxylic acids, esters, amines, nitriles, aldehydes, ketones, and amides. These various functional groups give organic molecules distinctive physical and chemical characteristics like boiling points, solubility, reactivity, acidity, basicity, polarity, and stability. For instance, bromine reacts very strongly with some organic molecules due to its high affinity towards electron-rich centers; this explains why many reactions involving the replacement of chloride by bromide occur so readily.
