    Study Notes

Chemistry is one of the most fundamental sciences, encompassing various branches that delve into different aspects of matter and its behavior. Organic chemistry focuses on compounds containing carbon atoms, where hydrogen and other elements may also be present. Physical chemistry deals with concepts such as thermodynamics, kinetics, spectroscopy, equilibrium, and chemical reactions in general. Analytical chemistry involves qualitative and quantitative determination of chemical components in a substance using techniques like chromatography, electrophoresis, gravimetry, titration, and calorimetry. Inorganic chemistry studies all non-carbon based molecules; it's involved heavily with metals, nonmetals, metalloids, ceramics, minerals, rocks, soil, and fossil fuels. These areas have extensive overlap between them and often work together to advance understanding of matter and materials.

Organic chemistry studies the structure and properties of carbon-containing compounds, which can range from simple alkanes found in gasoline to complex drugs used to treat diseases. It helps give us insights into how living organisms make their own molecules, and what we might need to do to create new ones that could help people live healthier lives. Physical chemistry examines relationships among energy, heat, work, temperature, pressure, and specific properties of matter. This branch has helped us understand why certain chemicals react so quickly while others take forever, as well as why some gas mixtures explode when you light them up, whereas others just burn gently. Analytical chemistry provides tools for measuring the concentration of substances in any given mixture, which allows scientists to monitor processes within cells, trace pollutants in our environment, and detect toxins in food products. Without this field, chemists would struggle greatly in determining whether they were making something useful or harmful! Finally, inorganic chemistry covers everything else besides carbon compounds, including metals and other common elements. By studying these substances, researchers learn more about how things move around on Earth, form clouds, fall out of trees, and grow on animals. All of these fields work together to enable breakthroughs across many scientific disciplines.
