The Founding of Rome
The city of Rome didn't start as the grand metropolis we imagine today. Instead, it began as a collection of humble settlements and villages. These initial dwellings weren't founded by legendary twins, but rather by various local tribes seeking refuge from marauding enemies and taking advantage of the natural resources of the area.
As time passed, these small communities banded together under the rule of kings, collectively known as the Etruscans. Under their leadership, Rome saw significant development. The Etruscans, skilled engineers, drained the marshlands surrounding Rome, constructing underground sewers and laying down roads and bridges. They also established key markets and meeting places, such as the Forum Boarium and the Forum Romanum, which later became the central hub of the empire.
From Monarchy to Republic
Rome's governance shifted dramatically in 509 BC, when the Roman people supposedly cast out its final Etruscan king, Lucius Tarquinius Superbus, via a coup led by Lucius Tarquinius Collatinus' brother, Brutus. The catalyst for this change was a horrific act of violence involving Tarquinius' son, Sextus, and a noblewoman named Lucretia. Desiring revenge and freedom from monarchic rule, Brutus and his supporters instigated a revolution, marking the birth of the Roman Republic.
