Study Notes
Freshwater Ecosystems
- Defined by salt concentration less than 0.5 ppt.
- Examples include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, aquifers, and springs.
Brackish Ecosystems
- Mix of freshwater and saltwater.
- Salt concentration between 0.5 and 30 ppt.
- Examples include estuaries, mangrove swamps, marshes, some parts of seas, and certain lakes.
Marine Ecosystems
- Saltwater ecosystems with salt concentration above 30 ppt.
- Examples include oceans and seas.
Lakes (Lentic) Life Zones
- Littoral Zone: Near shore, sunlight penetrates, high plant and animal life due to nutrient runoff.
- Limnetic Zone: Away from shore, sunlight penetrates to a certain depth. Plankton, crustaceans, and some fish inhabit this zone.
- Profundal Zone: Deep, no sunlight penetration, colder, denser water, low oxygen, minimal plant life, benthic microorganisms present.
- Benthic Zone: Lake bottom, no sunlight, benthic detritivores break down organic matter.
- Oligotrophic Lakes: Low nutrient levels, low biodiversity, clear water, colder climates (e.g., Lake Joseph, NY).
- Mesotrophic Lakes: Moderate nutrient levels, relatively clear water, high biological productivity (e.g., Lake Travis, TX).
- Eutrophic Lakes: High nutrient levels, often due to human activity (cultural eutrophication), low oxygen levels (e.g., Lake LBJ, TX).
Rivers (Lotic) Life Zones
- Source Zone: Upper river, fast-flowing water, high dissolved oxygen, some plant life.
- Transition Zone: Wider, slower-moving water, warmer temperatures, lower dissolved oxygen, higher biodiversity.
- Floodplain Zone: Widest and deepest part, slowest water, less dissolved oxygen, high nutrient levels, filters pollutants, high biodiversity.
Marine Life Zones (Vertical)
- Epipelagic (Sunlight) Zone: Surface waters, sunlight available, high biological productivity (plankton, sharks, rays, etc.).
- Mesopelagic (Twilight) Zone: Limited sunlight, increasing pressure, decreasing temperature (octopus, squid).
- Bathypelagic (Midnight) Zone: No sunlight, bioluminescent organisms (chemosynthetic algae, anglerfish, sperm whales).
- Abyssopelagic (Abyssal) Zone: No light, intense pressure, mostly invertebrates.
- Hadalpelagic (Hadal) Zone: Trenches, extreme pressure and cold temperatures (grenadiers, cusk eels, pearlfish).
Marine Life Zones (Horizontal)
- Intertidal (Littoral) Zone: Shoreline between high and low tides, organisms adapted to water movement (sea stars, snails, seaweed etc.).
- Neritic (Sublittoral) Zone: Shallow area extending from shoreline, high biological productivity, includes coral reefs (coral, crustaceans, mollusks etc.).
- Oceanic Zone: Open ocean beyond continental shelf, includes photic and aphotic zones, diverse life (plankton, large game fish, whales etc.).
Components of Aquatic Life Zones
- Salinity
- Seasonal water temperature changes
- Dissolved oxygen levels
- Water flow
- Organisms and their adaptations
- Sunlight availability (photic/aphotic)
- Nutrient availability
Biological, Chemical, Geological, and Physical Components of Aquatic Life Zones
- Biological: Dynamics of aquatic communities.
- Chemical: Effects of pollutants on water chemistry (salinity, dissolved oxygen).
- Geological: Seafloor, lake floor, and riverbed topography; tectonic effects.
- Physical: Sunlight availability and temperature.
Adaptations of Freshwater vs. Marine Organisms
- Freshwater Adaptations: Tolerance for low dissolved oxygen and salinity, aerenchyma (enlarged gas spaces in wetland plant stems), strong roots.
- Marine Adaptations: Blubber for warmth (mammals), bioluminescence (deep-sea fish), salt glands (sharks, rays, some reptiles, birds).
