- Fought between Britain and France from 1754 to 1763 over control of eastern North America
- Involved the French and most eastern Native Americans fighting against the British
- Britain won the war, and France lost much of its land in North America to Britain through the Treaty of Paris
Native American Reaction
- Native Americans who had been allies with the French were unhappy with the Treaty of Paris
- They had benefited from trading with France and resented Britain's control over their lands
- Tribes like the Huron and Ottawa continued fighting the British, led by Ottawa leader Pontiac in 1763
British Colonists and the West
- By the end of the French and Indian War, many British colonists planned to move further west across the Appalachian Mountains and into the Ohio River Valley
- Particularly in Pennsylvania and Virginia, there was great interest in the lands west of the mountains
The Proclamation of 1763
