    Language Learning: Mistakes or Opportunities?

    • Mistakes are opportunities for learning and research.
    • Quotes from Stan Wawrinka (3 grand slam singles titles) and Samuel Beckett (Nobel Prize for Literature 1969). A quote from Beckett "Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better." is followed by examples in French from the lecture.
    • Quote from Billie Jean King: "Losing a match isn't failure. It's research".
    • Mistakes lead to learning, focusing on "why did I get is wrong?" and "how do I get it right?".

    Week 2 Outline (starting 16 September)

    • First Grammar Workshop: Read grammar sections in Grammaire Progressive, Chapters 4 and 19
    • Study and complete exercises:
      • p. 23, Ex. 1 and 2
      • p. 25, Ex. 1 and 2
      • p. 27, Ex. 1 and 2
    • Textbook scans are available on Brightspace for those who cannot access the textbook. Print out relevant sections and complete the exercises in advance of class.

    Module Assessment

    • Two assessment elements:
      • Mid-term Grammar Test (25%): Week 8, online, closed book
      • End-of-term Examination (75%): December exam session, in-person, closed book
    • Assessment based on the UCD Registry Assessment Alternative Linear Conversion Scale (40% Pass)

    Reading Comprehension Exercise

    • Homework exercises in weeks 3, 5, 7, 10
    • Reading Comprehension homework in French (one side of A4) has two parts:
      • Online quiz (complete via Brightspace, automatic correction, but bring hard copy to class for review).
      • Written périphrases and translation exercises (download from Brightspace, complete manually and bring hard copy to class for submission and manual correction)
    • Online quiz sections: A, B, and C (under Assessment > Quizzes); D and E (under Assessment > Assignments).

    Grammatical Awareness

    • Grammar is a set of principles and rules behind language use, vital for understanding how language works.
    • Grammar as metalanguage allows for discussion of language (a set of terms to describe language use.)
    • This is a tool for building and analyzing sentences.
    • Two primary sets of grammatical terms: parts of speech and grammatical functions

    Parts of Speech (Les Parties du discours)

    • i. Noun (le nom): (name of a person, animal, place, thing or idea)
      • proper noun (e.g., Pierre), specific name, initial letter capitalized
      • common noun (e.g., pierre), general term in lower case letter
    • ii. Article (l'article)
      • definite article (e.g., the - le/la/les)
      • indefinite article (e.g., a/an/some - un/une/des)
      • partitive article (e.g., some - du/de la/des)
    • iii. Pronoun (le pronom): replacing a noun (e.g., Georges). Followed by an antecedent in the sentence (e.g., Georges in example sentences.)
    • iv. Adjective (l'adjectif): qualifies noun (e.g. green house - la maison verte. cloudy sky - le ciel nuageux)
    • v. Verb (le verbe): Describes actions (e.g., to walk - marcher), or states (e.g., sleep - dormir).
    • vi. Adverb (l'adverbe): qualifies verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs, frequently ending in ‘-ment’. (e.g. quickly, quietly).
    • vii. Preposition (la préposition): connects other words in the sentence (e.g., on the table - sur la table and to school - à l'école).
    • viii. Conjunction (la conjonction): connects clauses in the sentence (e.g., and - et, but - mais, because - parce que).

    Périphrases

    • Define briefly (one or two sentences) in French a word or expression from the set text.
    • The answer requires a conjugated verb and must be in full sentence form, starting with a capital letter and ending with a full stop.
    • Formulae for périphrases are available on Brightspace (e.g. "How else to say this?")

    Online Quiz

    • Sections A, B, and C, parts of speech and grammatical functions, are for the quiz.
    • 10 questions for comprehension (3 points per question).
    • 5 questions for parts of speech (2 points per question).
    • 5 questions for grammatical functions (2 points per question).
    • An honesty declaration is required.
    • Two attempts are allowed; the higher score will be recorded.

    Homework for Next Week (Week 3) - starting 23 September

    • Reading Comprehension 1: online quiz (Sections A, B, and C) due by 1.00pm Monday 23 September.
    • Périphrases and translation sentences (Sections D, and E): complete answers in a word file (bring a paper file to class for submission)

    Additional instructions

    • Printed copies of online quizzes are required for discussion in class.
    • Print-offs of homework (Périphrases and Translation sentences) are required.
    • Follow-up discussion on the readings in a small group setting is scheduled.
