Study Notes

  • Force is defined as a personal pull that acts on an object due to its interaction with another object. Measured in newtons, forces have both magnitude and direction, making them vector quantities.
  • Contact forces and non-contact forces are two main types of forces. Contact forces are those where objects are physically touching, such as friction between a board and sand, or the force of a hand pushing a box. Non-contact forces don't require objects to be touching for them to act, like air resistance or the force of gravity.
  • Gravity is a non-contact force of attraction between any two objects that have mass. It acts on objects even if they're not in contact with each other.
  • Magnetic forces can be attractive or repulsive depending on the poles of the magnets. They act through empty space, not requiring objects to be in contact with each other.
  • Electrostatic forces exist between charged objects and can also be attractive or repulsive. They act through empty space and have a decreasing strength as the objects get further apart.
  • Normal contact force, also called the reaction force, is the force exerted by a surface on an object in contact with it. This force keeps the object in place and keeps it from falling.
  • Tension is a contact force that is the pulling force through a rope or other material. It is a continuous force that is maintained as long as the material is under tension.

Test your knowledge on forces and the different types of forces including contact forces, non-contact forces, gravity, magnetic forces, electrostatic forces, normal contact force, and tension. Understand the concepts of magnitude, direction, vector quantities, and the measurement of force in newtons.
