    Food Safety and Standards Act, 2008

    • The Act defines a "package" as the container for pre-packed food products, including boxes, bottles, tins, barrels, cases, pouches, receptacles, sacks, bags, wrappers and other similar items.
    • Primary food, according to the Act, refers to agricultural, horticultural, animal husbandry, dairy, or aquaculture products in their natural form, before any processing.
    • The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is established by the Act, headed by a Chairperson and twenty-two members.
    • Food Authority is a body corporate with perpetual succession, a common seal, and the power to acquire, hold, and dispose of property.
    • The Food Authority can establish offices in any location within India, with the main office in Delhi.
    • The Food Authority is responsible for making public the opinions of the Scientific Committee and Scientific Panel, the annual declaration of interests of members, and the results of scientific studies.
