Florida Driver Improvement Course

Driver Improvement Course Requirements

• The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles screens crash reports to identify crashes involving death or bodily injury, property damage, or repeat offenders.
• Operators involved in these crashes may be required to attend a department-approved driver improvement course to maintain their driving privileges.

Course Requirements

• Courses must include instruction on the rights of vulnerable road users relative to vehicles on the roadway.
• Operators who fail to complete the course within 90 days will have their driver license canceled until the course is successfully completed.

Behind-the-Wheel Instruction

• Operators who have been involved in multiple crashes may be required to attend a course with behind-the-wheel instruction and an assessment of their ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
• Successful completion of a behind-the-wheel examination is required to receive completion credit for the course.

Specific Violations

• Operators convicted of violating certain traffic laws, such as s. 316.074(1), s. 316.075(1)(c)1., s. 316.172, s. 316.191, or s. 316.192, may be required to attend a driver improvement course.
• The department will send notice to the operator within 10 days of receiving a notice of judicial disposition, and the operator must complete the course within 90 days.

Court Withheld Adjudication

• If the court withholds adjudication for certain violations, the operator may not be required to attend a driver improvement course, unless the court finds it necessary.
• The department will send notice to the operator within 10 days of receiving a notice of judicial disposition, and the operator must complete the course within 90 days.

Course Approval

• The department considers course content, safety, driver awareness, crash avoidance techniques, and other factors to improve driver performance from a safety viewpoint when approving a driver improvement course.
