Florida DMV DUI Numbers
In Florida, driving under the influence (DUI) of alcoholic beverages, chemical substances, or controlled substances is considered one offense, proven either by impairment of normal faculties or an unlawful blood alcohol or breath alcohol level of .08 or above. The penalties for a first conviction include a fine ranging from $500 to $1,000, while subsequent convictions result in increasingly higher fines and longer license revocation periods.
According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FDOT), impaired driving is involved in about one-quarter of all motor vehicle deaths in the state. In March 2022, there were 5,746 impaired-driving crashes in Florida, with nearly 10% (568) occurring in March. Six of Florida's counties accounted for over 37% of Florida’s impaired-driving crashes in March that year, with the highest counts being Pinellas (64), Duval (58), Hillsborough (54), Lee (49), Orange (40), and Manatee (34). During the same month, there were 3,013 DUI citations and 647 open-container citations issued in Florida.
Impairment is not limited to just alcohol; it can also involve recreational and pharmaceutical drugs. The FLHSMV reminds everyone that getting behind the wheel under the influence of drugs or alcohol is illegal.
