Game Play
- The game begins with a kickoff from the twenty-yard line.
- Each play begins at the line of scrimmage.
- The line of scrimmage is where the person carrying the ball is either tagged, tackled or their flag is pulled.
Centering the Ball
- The center may not pick up the ball.
- If the ball touches the ground on the snap before the quarterback catches it, it is down at that spot.
Offensive Players
- Everyone on the offensive team is eligible to go out for a pass.
- Two completed passes gives the offensive team a first down.
Defensive Players
- The defense must count to 5-1000 before they can rush the quarterback
- If the defense rushes the quarterback, the quarterback can run, but does not count as a completion.
- On fourth down the offense may punt, but they must tell the defense before the play begins.
- Defense may not rush if the offense decides to punt.
Scoring
- Touchdown = 7 points.
- Safety = 2 points.
- Field goal = 3 points.
Penalties
- Tripping, pushing, or holding on offense and defense.
- Off sides- a player cannot cross the line of scrimmage until the ball is snapped to the quarterback.
Offensive Positions
- Backs - are the players that ordinarily carry or pass the ball on the offensive team.
- Blocking - the action taken by the offensive linemen and backs in which the body is used to keep defensive players away from the ball.
- Center - The offensive lineman that snaps the ball to the quarterback to begin each play.
- End - the players located at each end of the line of scrimmage.
Other Terms
- Defensive team - the team that does not have the ball.
- Field goal - a place kick that passes through the goal posts; usually done on 4th down and is worth 3 points.
- Forward pass - A pass thrown to a teammate from behind the line of scrimmage.
