Study Notes
Fitting Shop Objectives
- Students will be able to understand operations in the fitting shop
- Students will understand various tools used in the fitting shop
- Students will practice in the fitting shop
Safety Precautions and Rules
- Clothing: Do not wear loose clothes that could get caught in machinery. Wear tight-fitting clothes.
- Eye Protection: Always wear safety goggles while working in the shop.
- Jewelry and Ties: Remove ties, watches, rings, and other jewelry before entering the shop.
- Hair: Secure long hair to prevent it from becoming entangled in machinery.
- Footwear: Wear safety shoes (steel-toe) to protect feet from falling objects. Avoid sandals or soft shoes.
Fitting
- Fitting involves preparing parts to touch or join seamlessly, one inside the other or sliding upon each other. The parts need to hold firmly together.
Fitting Shop Description
- Fitting shop is the place where fitting and assembling work is performed.
- Some repair, maintenance, and die punch work happens here as well.
- Bench work involves creating an item by hand.
- Fitting is often about assembling parts and removing material to ensure a correct fit, this may or may not happen on the bench.
Fitting Shop Operations
- Hand operations include measuring, marking, filing, sawing, scraping, drilling, tapping, die sinking, and grinding. Hand tools and power-operated portable tools are used.
- Measuring and maintaining equipment is also important in the fitting shop.
- Many hand tools and devices are used in fitting work.
Measuring and Marking Tools
- Measurement: Determining size, quantity, or degree using instruments and devices.
- Marking: Placing lines and points on work pieces.
- Tools like steel rules, try squares, dividers, calipers, scribers, punches, vernier calipers, micrometers, surface gauges, and drill gauges are described.
Cutting Tools
- Hack Saw: Used for cutting metal. Different frame types use various blade lengths.
- Blades are made from high-carbon or low-alloy steel.
- Common blades are 0.7 mm thick and between 20-30cm long.
Additional Cutting Tools
- Chisels: Used to cut thin sheets or remove material from large surfaces, producing lower accuracy.
- Drills: Used to make holes in metal.
- Threading Tools (Taps and Dies): Used to create internal and external threads on rods or tubes.
Finishing Tools
- Files: Tools with multiple teeth-like cutting edges for creating smooth surfaces. They are various shapes like flat, round, square, triangular, and knife edge.
- Reamer: Used to control the diameter of a hole to improve the internal surface finish and roundness.
Striking Tools
- Hammers: Used for striking chisels or punches. Different types of hammers (ball peen, cross peen, straight peen, and claw) are used for different purposes like punching, chipping, and marking.
Holding Tools
- Vices: Work-holding devices used to securely grip the work piece during operations. Bench vices have a cast iron body, movable jaw, fixed jaw, handle, and a threaded screw.
- Pipe Vices: Hold pipes securely for operations.
- V-Blocks: Supports round bars for operations like drilling, while holding them at the correct angle.
- C-Clamps: Useful for clamping and holding round bar shapes in fitting.
Supporting and Miscellaneous Tools
- Anvil: Supports work pieces during hammering, chiseling, and punching operations.
- File Cards: Remove small chips from file surfaces.
- Screwdrivers: Used for tightening and loosening screws.
- Spanners/Wrenches: Used to tighten or loosen nuts and bolts (single-ended, double-ended, adjustable, box).
