Study Notes

First aid is a set of actions taken in the event of an accident or sudden illness before the arrival of emergency medical services. The goals of first aid are to save lives, prevent permanent damage, and shorten treatment and rehabilitation time. Basic rules of first aid include not creating panic, following the principle of "do no harm," not doing more than expected, and prioritizing safety. Urgent first aid procedures include placing an unconscious person in a lateral position, resuscitating a person who is not breathing or whose heart has stopped, and stopping severe bleeding. Symptoms of alcohol poisoning include the smell of alcohol, vomiting, impaired consciousness, deep breathing, and weak pulse. If an intoxicated person is conscious, they should be taken to a safe place and kept warm. If they are unconscious and breathing, they should be placed in a lateral position. If they are unconscious and not breathing, emergency medical services should be called and CPR should be started. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can accumulate in the blood and be toxic even at low levels. Symptoms of CO poisoning include fatigue, drowsiness, headache, weakness in the limbs, dizziness, vomiting, loss of consciousness, and death. If CO poisoning is suspected, all doors and windows should be opened immediately, emergency medical services and firefighters should be called, and any conscious persons should be helped to leave the area. If an unconscious person is breathing, they should be placed in a lateral position. If they are not breathing, CPR should be started.
