    Study Notes

    Chain of Survival

    • Early Access and Recognition - Importance of recognizing a cardiac arrest and seeking help immediately
    • Early CPR- Performed by a First Aider and buys lifesaving time for the casualty
    • Early Defibrillation - Performed by an AED, delivers a controlled electric shock to the casualty's heart
    • Early Advanced Care - Focuses on preserving brain and heart function and is carried out by highly trained medical personnel

    Moving a Casualty

    • Check the casualty's position first - Only move if they are at risk
    • Roll them onto their back gently - Support their head and neck
    • Get assistance from bystanders if needed - Use good manual handling techniques
    • Don't move a casualty alone
    • Maintain a straight back and bend your legs - Avoid bending your back
    • Keep the load close to your body - Avoid reaching and lifting

    Assessing Responsiveness: C.O.W.S. Method

    • Can you hear me? - Ask if they are hurt or sick
    • Open your eyes - See if they can look left and right
    • What is your name? - Check if they can respond to questions
    • Squeeze my hands - See if they squeeze back

    Responding to a Responsive Casualty

    • Leave them in the position you found them - Ensure there's no further danger or risk
    • Perform a secondary survey - Check for injuries visually and verbally
    • Get help if required

    Sending for Help

    • Shout for help to alert people nearby
    • Direct a bystander to call for an ambulance
    • Ask for an AED
    • Use your phone if you are on your own

    Airway Management

    • Ensure an open and clear airway - Priority over any injuries
    • Tilt the head back - Adults and children over 1 year old
    • Maintain neutral head position - Infants under 1 year old
    • Look into the back of the throat - Check if anything is blocking the airway

    Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

    • Kneel by the side of the casualty
    • Place the heel of one hand in the center of the chest - On the lower half of the sternum
    • Place your other hand on top of the first
