Chain of Survival
- Early Access and Recognition - Importance of recognizing a cardiac arrest and seeking help immediately
- Early CPR- Performed by a First Aider and buys lifesaving time for the casualty
- Early Defibrillation - Performed by an AED, delivers a controlled electric shock to the casualty's heart
- Early Advanced Care - Focuses on preserving brain and heart function and is carried out by highly trained medical personnel
Moving a Casualty
- Check the casualty's position first - Only move if they are at risk
- Roll them onto their back gently - Support their head and neck
- Get assistance from bystanders if needed - Use good manual handling techniques
- Don't move a casualty alone
- Maintain a straight back and bend your legs - Avoid bending your back
- Keep the load close to your body - Avoid reaching and lifting
Assessing Responsiveness: C.O.W.S. Method
- Can you hear me? - Ask if they are hurt or sick
- Open your eyes - See if they can look left and right
- What is your name? - Check if they can respond to questions
- Squeeze my hands - See if they squeeze back
Responding to a Responsive Casualty
- Leave them in the position you found them - Ensure there's no further danger or risk
- Perform a secondary survey - Check for injuries visually and verbally
- Get help if required
Sending for Help
- Shout for help to alert people nearby
- Direct a bystander to call for an ambulance
- Ask for an AED
- Use your phone if you are on your own
Airway Management
- Ensure an open and clear airway - Priority over any injuries
- Tilt the head back - Adults and children over 1 year old
- Maintain neutral head position - Infants under 1 year old
- Look into the back of the throat - Check if anything is blocking the airway
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
- Kneel by the side of the casualty
- Place the heel of one hand in the center of the chest - On the lower half of the sternum
- Place your other hand on top of the first
- Use two fingers for infants
