12 Questions
What is the minimum personal protective equipment required for Ventilation Sector operations?
Full PPE including SCBA
What is the primary purpose of immediately pressurizing a stairwell using the HVAC system or PPV during Ventilation Operations?
To provide a safe egress for occupants and firefighters
What is the recommended approach to ventilation in uncontaminated stairwells?
Do not open roof hatches to prevent the chimney effect
What is the primary reason hydraulic ventilation is not recommended in High Rise buildings?
Debris can be dislodged, injuring people or puncturing hose lines
What is the first phase of Ventilation Operations?
Smoke Containment
What tool is used to connect the firefighter to a ladder while forcing a roof hatch?
Aerial Fall Protection Belt
What is the primary purpose of opening the stairwell door during ventilation?
To push smoke out of the contaminated hallway
In a scenario where smoke is contained to a single floor, what is the role of the failed or removed window(s)?
Exhaust opening for smoke
When ventilating a hallway with smoke contained to a single floor, what should be done with the smoke?
Push it into the opposite stairwell and out the corresponding roof hatch
What is the primary concern when ventilating a building with smoke on multiple floors?
Ensuring the stairwell is not contaminated
When dealing with smoke on multiple floors, where should ventilation start?
At the lowest contaminated level
What is crucial for effective ventilation in a smoke-filled building?
Well communicated and coordinated efforts
Study Notes
Ventilation Operations Equipment
- Full PPE including SCBA is required for Ventilation Sector crews
- Forcible entry tools:
- Large bolt cutters
- 30” Halligan bar
- Flat Head Axe or Sledgehammer
- Aerial Fall Protection Belt is needed to connect the Firefighter to a ladder while forcing a roof hatch
Ventilation Operation Phases
- Two phases: Smoke Containment and Smoke Removal
- Smoke Containment: prevent smoke from entering hallways and stairwells during extinguishment of the fire
- Smoke Removal: remove smoke after extinguishment of the fire
Smoke Containment Steps
- Immediately pressurize a stairwell using the HVAC system or PPV to:
- Provide a safe egress for occupants
- Provide a safe egress for firefighters
- Prevent smoke movement into the stairwell
- Do not open roof hatches in uncontaminated stairwells to prevent a chimney effect
Smoke Removal Steps
- Hydraulic Ventilation is not recommended in High Rise buildings due to debris being dislodged
- Fire in Unit and Smoke Contained to Floor of Origin:
- Use pressure established in the stairwell to open the applicable stairwell door
- Direct air flow down the corridor and through the unit of origin using the failed or removed window(s) as exhaust opening(s)
- Fire in a Hallway and Smoke Contained to Floor of Origin:
- Open the stairwell door and push smoke from the contaminated hallway into the opposite stairwell and out the corresponding roof hatch
- This must be done in a well communicated and coordinated manner
- Smoke on Multiple Floors:
- Use pressure established in the stairwell and start at the lowest contaminated level
- Open appropriate doors and push smoke from contaminated corridors into the opposite stairwell and out the corresponding roof hatch
- This must be done in a well communicated and coordinated manner
