Decontamination Procedures for Firefighters
- Decontamination procedures are essential for structural firefighting personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure safety for firefighters and fire investigators.
- Company Officers, Fire Investigator Captains, Incident Safety Officers (ISO), and Incident Commanders (IC) must promote the importance of post-fire decontamination and firefighter hygiene.
Responsibility
- All Toronto Fire Services (TFS) personnel must understand and follow the Standard Operating Guideline for decontamination procedures.
- Personnel are responsible for using and wearing required equipment, protective devices, and clothing.
- Supervisors are responsible for ensuring personnel understand and adhere to the Standard Operating Guideline and procedures.
Guidelines
- Maintaining the cleanliness of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and equipment is critical to prevent health hazards.
- Officers and firefighters must engage in post-incident exposure mitigation for personnel protection.
- Officers are responsible for ensuring personnel return to their station for post-incident decontamination of personnel, vehicle, equipment, and PPE.
Decontamination Process
- No personnel shall enter the cab of any vehicle after being exposed to VOHs or PAHs without undergoing initial firefighter hygiene and decontamination mitigation measures on scene.
- The IC shall establish a Decontamination Sector at all working fires, consisting of a Post Incident Decontamination Officer and an assigned Decontamination Apparatus.
- Decontamination and initial firefighter hygiene and initial decontamination of equipment are to be conducted in the 'Warm Zone' only.
- On-scene decontamination is the responsibility of each individual firefighter to initiate when required.
Decontamination Sector
- The IC will identify Hot, Warm, and Cold contamination zones early in an incident to ensure clarity on sector locations.
- The ISO assigned at all working fires is responsible for the Decontamination (Warm Zone), Rehabilitation (Warm Zone), and Staging sectors (Cold Zone).
