Study Notes
MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY Procedure
- Purpose: Ensure all personnel are aware of a trapped or lost firefighter's MAYDAY call, enabling rapid response. Crucial due to the limited time firefighters have in distress situations.
- Scope: Applies to all personnel at emergency incidents.
- Responsibilities:
- Incident Commander: Implements procedure according to guidelines.
- Everyone: Notice & respond to worsening conditions, understanding actions if personnel are trapped/lost.
- Division/Group Officers: Manage their division's tasks, company integrity, continuation of attack plans, rescue efforts within division.
- Company Officers/Team Leaders: Maintain crew integrity, report lost/trapped/separated crew members immediately to IC.
- Firefighters: Prioritize their own safety and crew integrity while performing assigned tasks.
- Guidelines:
- Rescue is time-sensitive in toxic environments due to limited SCBA air.
- Early notification that a firefighter or company is missing/in trouble is essential.
- Predictable self-survival actions from the lost/trapped firefighter.
- Standardized, prioritized, and aggressive actions by the Incident Commander and Rapid Intervention Team (RIT).
Declaring a MAYDAY
- Action: If a person is lost, trapped, disoriented or injured: MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY followed by location, unit number, name, assignment (per Incident Management System), and resources needed.
- PASS Device: Activate the PASS device.
