Fire Stream Management
Standard Operating Pressures and GPM Flows
- Interior 1 3/4" lines: nozzle pressure of 60 psi (fog nozzles) or 50 psi (smooth bore nozzles), calculated at 200 GPM
- Exterior handlines with 250 GPM fog nozzles: same as interior lines
- Smooth bore nozzles: calculated with nozzle pressure of 50 psi and GPM flows of 200, 250, or 300 depending on tip size
- Exterior master streams: nozzle pressure of 100 psi (fog nozzles) or 80 psi (smooth bore nozzles), with GPM flows ranging from 400 to 1000 depending on tip size
Engine Discharge Pressure
- Initial engine discharge pressure: 150 psi for pumpers supporting sprinkler and/or standpipe systems
- Adjustments to engine discharge pressure:
- If building not equipped with fire pump, increase to maintain standard operating pressures and GPM flows
- If building equipped with fire pump and initial discharge pressure of 150 psi is overcoming fire pump, increase engine discharge pressure
- If building equipped with fire pump and initial discharge pressure of 150 psi is not overcoming fire pump, shut down pumper and use building's fire pump
Foam Operations
- In-line foam eductors: 95 GPM units, calibrated for 200 psi inlet pressure
- Foam eductors capable of handling 300 feet of 1 3/4" hose after eductor
- Foam concentration: 3%
- Foam application: can be used with standard fog nozzle or foam aspirating nozzle
Hydrant Connections
- Flush hydrant to ensure working condition and remove debris prior to hooking up hose or appliance
- Use soft sleeve or 5" LDH connected to hydrant steamer connection
- If no steamer port, use adaptors to connect to 2 ½” port(s)
Relay Pumping
- First-arriving engine positions at fire, with Company Officer determining water needed
- Initial attack made with water carried on pumper
- Relay setup with largest capacity pumper at water source
- Pumpers keep at least 100 feet of hose in reserve for hoseline bursts
- Pump operators (except supply) bleed air from supply hose using Master Intake Valve (MIV)
- Pumper at water source starts at idle, maintaining 20 psi residual and adding 20 psi for relay
- Attack pumper operator informs other pump operators of water needed
- Supply pumper throttle adjusted to reach operating pressure, with discharge pressure not exceeding 200 psi and residual pressure not falling below 20 psi
