Study Notes

Fire Protection System

  • Objectives: Maintain conditions conducive to life safety, property protection, and minimized business interruption.

  • Elements of Fire Protection: Early Detection & Alarm System, Means of Egress, Compartmentation, Smoke Control, Emergency Power, Fire Suppression System.

  • Types of Fire Protection Systems: Detection systems, Fireproofing for buildings, fire walls, fire barriers, fire doors, Smoke control systems, Sprinkler systems, Standpipe system, Special extinguishing systems (chemicals, foam, clean agents).

Standpipes & Fire Hoses

  • Automatic Wet System: Water supply within the piping, ready on demand; considered most effective and reliable.

  • Manual Wet System: No inherent water supply; water must be pumped into the pipes by the fire department.

  • Automatic Dry System: Normally filled with pressurized air, used where the risk of freezing is a concern; hose valve required for water.

  • Manual Dry System: No internal water supply, the water has to be pumped into the pipes by the fire department; commonly used in parking garages.

  • Semi-automatic Dry System: Similar to an automatic dry system but has a remote control to activate the valve to admit water.

  • Allowable Sprinkler Pipework: Domestic (solvent cement bonded, CPVC), Industrial and commercial (threaded galvanized mild steel).

Wet-Pipe System

  • Components: Distribution pipe, range pipes, riser to higher floors, hydraulic alarm gong, filter, supply to hose reels, sprinkler heads, fire brigade inlet, stop valve, drain pipe, and non return valve.

Dry-Pipe System

  • Components similar to wet pipe system; a dry pipe system will not have water flowing in the pipes, water has to be pumped in from a fire station.

Two-End Side with Centre Feed Pipe

  • Components: Distribution pipe, range pipes, sprinkler heads.

Two-End Centre with Central Feed Pipe

  • Components: Distribution pipe, range pipes, sprinkler heads, and riser.

SPRINKLER SYSTEM

  • Range Pipe: Sizes and maximum allowable sprinklers for different sizes of pipe.

  • Sprinkler Head: Sizes and maximum allowable sprinklers allowed for different distribution pipe sizes.

Fire Protection System: Sprinkler Head Spacing

  • Area covered by one head (maximum): 12.00 m².

  • Distance between heads: 4.00 m (maximum).

  • Distance from wall to ceiling with mounted head: 2.00 m (maximum).

  • Distance between heads in the same room: 2.00 m (minimum).

Fire Protection System: Quartzoid Bulb

  • Types: Orange (57°C), Red (68°C), Yellow (79°C), Green (93°C), Blue (141°C), Mauve (182°C), and Black (204 or 260°C).

Signal System

  • Types: Fire Alarms, Telephone Systems, Security Systems, Central Monitoring & Control Systems

  • Components: Signal source, means of conveying the signal, indicating equipment at the destination.

  • Symbols: Different symbols for indicating various signal sources.

Signal System Initiating Device

  • Alarm Initiating Device: Fire and Smoke Detectors, Manual Detection with Pull and Station, Audio Indicators (Bell Horns).

Local Area Network (LAN) Systems

  • Components: Horizontal Telecom Closet, Backbone, Main Cross-Connect, Intermediate Cross-Connect

Wireless Area Network (WAN) Systems

  • Components: Internet connection, DSL Modem, Wireless PCs, LAN type.

Security Systems

  • Purpose: extend surveillance activities, reduce crime incidence.

  • Devices: CCTV, Motion Detectors, Intrusion Detectors, Scream Alarms.

Central Monitoring & Control Systems

  • Purpose: controls and operates service systems (HVAC, Lighting, Shading Devices, Electrical Loadings) in a building.
