Extinguishers

  • This manual chapter provides general information regarding fire extinguishers

Responsibility

  • Each member should use appropriate control based on rank when implementing this chapter

General Information

  • The Philadelphia Fire Department (PFD) carries different extinguishers for different purposes

ANSUL Extinguishers

  • Weight options are 10 lbs or 30 lbs
  • Effective for Class "B" fires (flammable liquids, greases)
  • Not effective for deep-seated Class "A" fires due to little cooling effect and inability to penetrate the burning surface
  • May be useful on surface fires in small amounts of Class "A" combustibles
  • Can be used on Class "C" electrical fires
  • Consideration should be given to possible hazards due to reduced visibility from the dry chemical cloud
  • The multi-purpose dry chemical agent used has a monoammonium phosphate base

ANSUL Main Parts

  • Main body (dry chemical chamber)
  • CO2 cartridge with left hand thread
  • Cartridge guard
  • Hose
  • Nozzle with trigger grip
  • Fill cap
  • Carrying handle

ANSUL Nozzle

  • Equipped with a standard low flow unpainted nozzle
  • Nozzle range is 5 to 20 feet with a duration of 10 to 25 seconds
  • Wide spray pattern is due to a cone-shaped tip
  • Design provides protection by breaking down the heat or thermal barrier

ANSUL Cartridge Seal

  • Cartridges are sealed with a brass seal assembly using a copper seat

ANSUL Inspection

  • Extinguisher should be in its designated place, visible, and accessible for immediate use
  • Obstructions should be removed
  • Check the visual seal on the cartridge receiver and any tamper-proof seal on the fill cap
  • Absence or breakage may indicate unreported use or tampering, requiring a complete maintenance check
  • Ansul indicator fill cap models have a red stem indicator which pops up if pressure has been relieved, needing a maintenance check
  • Remove from mounting bracket and lift slightly to determine if it's filled
  • Examine the shell, cartridge guard, cartridge receiver, and external parts for damage or corrosion
  • Examine the hose for cuts, weather checking, abrasion, or deformation, which could cause rupture upon pressurization
  • Check hose couplings for tightness, corrosion, or cracks, which could affect discharge or cause separation
  • Check the nozzle tip and handle for damage or obstructions, especially from insects
  • Secure the nozzle back into its holder

ABC Fire Extinguishers

  • Weight options include 20 lbs and 5 lbs (medic units only)
  • Use monoammonium phosphate, a dry chemical, and put out fires by smothering flames

ABC Inspection

  • Check the nozzle tip and handle for damage or obstructions, especially from insects
  • Secure the nozzle back into its holder

Indian Fire Pump

  • Consists of a short hose attached to the tank with a nozzle pump on the discharge end
  • Operated by holding the nozzle in one hand and the pump barrel in the other
  • Nozzle is used as a handle to forcefully slide in and out, generating a water stream up to 40 feet
  • Also has an add-on spray attachment
  • The small vent hole in the tank-fill cap must be kept clear

Indian Fire Pump Refilling

  • Remove the cap from the tank turning counterclockwise
  • Make sure the strainer is in place in the neck of the tank
  • Fill the tank with water to the desired level
  • Reinstall the cap by turning clockwise and tightening

Indian Fire Pump Spraying

  • Determine the desired spray pattern as the nozzle has a single-hole option for a stream or a two-hole option for a fan pattern
  • Screw the appropriate nozzle option onto the end of the pump and hand tighten
  • Operate the pump by sliding the handle in and out of the pump body. The pump will fill the cylinder on the “out” stroke and discharge the water on the “in” stroke

Indian Fire Pump Maintenance

  • After each use or before storage, pump clean water through the pump to remove dirt or debris
  • Apply light oil or grease at the gland nut
  • Regularly check the nozzle for dirt or debris that may affect the spray pattern
  • Regularly check the hose for cracks

Indian Fire Pump Tank Maintenance

  • After each use or before storage, rinse the tank with clean water
  • Check the cap vent check valve and cap gasket. Replace if showing signs of wear
  • Clean any dirt or debris from the strainer basket
  • Periodically check the straps for fraying. Replace as required
  • For dry storage, leave the cap off the tank and store the tank upside down

Pressurized Water Extinguishers

  • Capacity of 2 1/2 gallons
  • Not rated for Class "C" fires and can be a shock hazard near electrical equipment

Pressurized Water Inspection

  • Should be inspected monthly, or more often if circumstances to ensure readiness
    • Located in designated place
    • No obstructions to accessibility or visibility
    • Operating instructions on nameplate (label) and facing outward
    • Seals and tamper indicators are intact
    • Fullness determined by weight
    • Examine for damage, corrosion, leakage, or clogging in the nozzle
    • Pressure gauge reading in the operable area

Pressurized Water Recharging

  • Discharge remaining pressure and water
  • Remove the valve assembly and disassemble by removing down tube with a wrench on the brass retainer, then remove the spring and valve stem from the valve assembly and also remove the collar O-ring
  • Rinse parts with clean water, wipe dry with a soft cloth, and blow out the valve
  • Inspect/replace parts if worn or damaged (replace valve stem and collar O-ring) and inspect/replace the down tube
  • Rinse the cylinder with clean water and inspect the interior and replace the plastic fill tube before refilling with clean water until it overflows (2 ½ gallons)
  • Install valve assembly properly and hand-tighten the valve collar nut to 100-125 in. lbs.
  • Remove cap from air pressurizing valve and pressurize with 100 psi of air (regulator no more than 125 psi)
  • Check for leaks using leak detection fluid on the collar, gauge, cylinder welds, and valve orifice
  • Remove leak detection fluid by blowing out with air and wiping dry
  • Install hose assembly into the operating valve
  • Install ring pin with ring facing front of the extinguisher
