Relief Assignments
- Acting Company Officers are not normally required to relieve at another fire station as a Firefighter unless their truck has been removed from service or they are assigned to an Air-Light.
Limitations on Relief Assignments
- Personnel may be sent relieving to another fire station no more than twice in one shift before having the option to decline a third relief assignment.
- A pre-shift scheduled relief assignment to another fire station shall be considered one move.
Probationary Firefighters
- Probationary firefighters will be placed into the normal relief rotation upon completion of their Toronto Fire Services, Probationary Firefighter Assessment Period Book 3.
- They will relieve only in their currently assigned district until the completion of their probationary period.
Reporting Absences
- Personnel reporting an unscheduled absence after being sent on a relief assignment shall be reported to the Platoon Chief by the District Chief.
- The Platoon Chief shall document the circumstance and provide a written report to the respective Division Commander.
Relief Assignment Process
- Relief assignments will be determined and assigned to personnel on duty, the shift prior to the relief assignment.
- Personnel who have been given a relief assignment the shift prior are to report to their relief assignment no later than the normal relief time (0700 hrs).
- Company Officers shall promptly redirect personnel to apparatus for relieving when instructed to do so by an Officer of higher rank.
Pre-Departure Procedures
- Firefighters are responsible for knowing where they are going, the address and location of the fire station, and any other transportation considerations.
- Upon receiving a relief assignment, personnel shall gather all items necessary for normal daily duties without delay.
Arrival Procedures
- Upon arriving at the reassigned fire station, the relieving Firefighter shall report their arrival to an Officer of the fire station.
- The Officer shall direct the Firefighter to the Officer in Charge of the apparatus to which the Firefighter will be assigned or assign the firefighter their position on the apparatus.
Final Procedures
- The relieving Firefighter shall call their home Officer to confirm with that Officer of their relief assignment.
- The relieving Firefighter removes the PPE of the person they are replacing and places it neatly away from the apparatus.
- They shall then place their personal protective equipment (PPE) aboard the apparatus.
