Employee Injured and/or Hospitalized

  • Injured employees should be treated to stabilize their condition as soon as possible.
  • A District Chief should attend the hospital as soon as possible if an employee is being transported to a medical facility with an injury.
  • A fellow Firefighter may accompany the patient/employee to the medical facility unless the Toronto Paramedic Services unit has two attendants in the patient compartment.
  • Employees attending the hospital must not be in their bunker gear.
  • The District Chief should consult with the injured employee regarding family notifications (who and when).
  • The Fire Chief or designate is responsible for ensuring a family member is notified of the injured party if the individual is unconscious or unable to make the call.

Civilian Critical Injury

  • Critical injury protocol should be activated for critical injuries to civilians resulting from emergency operations, on TFS property, or as a result of TFS actions.
  • The Officer in Charge should ensure activation of standard response protocols.
  • When a critical injury occurs to a civilian due to a fire, the Incident Commander should ensure notification of the on-duty TFS Fire Investigator.

Incident Investigation and Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development Report

  • The incident should be investigated by the CJHSC Co-Chairs.
  • The Senior HR consultant Occupational Health and Safety may be requested to assist in gathering additional information, interviewing members, and generating prevention strategies.
  • The Management Co-Chair should compile a written report for the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development.
  • The report should be emailed to the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, and copies should be provided to various City employees.

WSIB Reporting

  • The employee's immediate supervising Officer should complete, sign, and submit a copy of the City of Toronto Supervisor's Report of Injury/Accident to the next level of Supervisor.
  • A copy of the report should be forwarded to the Human Resources Disability Management Consultant by email within 24 hours or the same working shift of the event.
  • The District Chief in charge of the training program should be informed of all injuries and incidents immediately.

Media

  • The name of injured TFS personnel should not be given out to any news media by TFS personnel until approved by the Fire Chief or their designate.
  • Media enquiries pertaining to injured TFS personnel should be referred to the Senior Officer or the Public Information Office (PIO).
