Study Notes
- Identify main fire alarm panel and locate initiated zone, which could be a conventional alarm system's zone or a specific device like a pull station or smoke/heat detector in an addressable alarm system.
- Verify there is no fire present in the primary zone and the entire building.
- Determine the activated initiating device, which could be automatic-detector/sensor or manual pull station.
- Silence the fire alarm panel by pressing the "silence" button if it's an unwanted activation. However, the panel or initiating devices should not be reset without authorization.
- Occupants and the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) can leave the building if: a.The fire alarm system is reset by a building or fire alarm company representative, with the annual service tag providing the company’s name and number. b.An approved fire watch (non-HFD personnel) is present for the premises if a qualified building representative isn't available. c.The building will remain vacant for commercial occupancies.
- One- and two-family dwellings don't require fire alarm systems, so this code doesn't apply. Noise complaints should be referred to the Honolulu Police Department.
- Document the following information in the records management system (RMS) for non-upgraded alarm incidents: a.Type of initiating device activated (automatic-detector/sensor or manual pull station). b.Name of the building representative or alarm company representative who reset the alarm, or name and title of the fire watch person and the reason the alarm could not be reset. c.Classification of false alarms as unwanted and subclassified as malicious, unintentional (cooking or smoking), nuisance, or unknown. d.Building occupancy type and whether it's occupied or not.
- If the alarm is a nuisance or unknown, send an email to [email protected] with the following information: a.Building name and address. b.Incident report number. c.Type of initiating device activated. d.History of unwanted alarms. e.Name of the building representative or alarm company representative who reset the alarm. f.Name and title of person designated as fire watch and the reason the alarm could not be reset. g.Whether the building was occupied or not.
