The Future Farmers of America, now known as the National FFA Organization, is a youth organization aimed at promoting agricultural education, with roots dating back over 90 years to its founding in 1928. While it started primarily with farming, modern agriculture has expanded the scope of FFA activities to encompass more than just traditional farm operations.

History of FFA

The history of FFA can be traced back to the late 19th century when teachers realized students needed practical experience along with academic instruction if they were going to become successful farmers. In response, several states began creating vocational agriculture programs where high school students could learn how to run their own farms through hands-on practice, rather than only studying theories from textbooks. These early efforts led to the formation of the National Vocational Agriculture Association in 1917.

In 1928, the organization was renamed the Future Farmers of America (FFA) during a national convention held in Kansas City, Missouri. This name change reflected hopes for the future of American agriculture, particularly after World War I had disrupted European trade and put food production squarely in the focus. Over time, the name evolved into what we know today as the National FFA Organization, reflecting the broader range of careers available within agriculture beyond just farming.

FFA Leadership Opportunities

One aspect of FFA involvement involves leadership positions at state and national levels. Students interested in taking on these roles must demonstrate leadership potential through participating in various competitive events such as public speaking contests, parliamentary procedure competitions, and conducting officer training sessions.

At the state level, students who show exceptional leadership skills may be awarded State Degree recipients. To earn this distinction, members must have completed three years' work in agricultural education classes, been active in chapter activities, participated in supervised agricultural experiences, and demonstrated outstanding leadership abilities.

On the national stage, there are four different degrees - greenhand, chapte, state, and American - each requiring progressively more extensive commitment and service. Earning an American degree is the highest honor bestowed upon students by the National FFA Organization.

FFA Career Development Events

Beyond leadership roles, another key component of FFA involvement revolves around career development events. These activities expose students to various aspects of agricultural science and business management while helping them develop lifelong professional skills and personal growth traits through competitive teamwork. Contestants prepare projects throughout the year under guidance from advisors before presenting their creations to judges at district, sectional, and regional competition meetings within each respective state.

There are six types of career development events: agriscience fair; livestock judging; horse evaluation; veterinary science; wildlife habitat evaluation; and nursery landscape design. These events give members an opportunity to explore interests within the field of agriculture, enhance critical thinking skills, promote teamwork, and build confidence through participation.

FFA Emblem

An iconic symbol associated with FFA membership is the Blue and Gold Emblem, which represents the association's purpose and ideals. It features two intertwined leaves representing agriculture and life, respectively. A golden torch stands between them symbolizing light and truth, signifying learning, discovery, and self-improvement. Above the torch sits a blue ribbon signifying the sky, hope, and ambition, all important characteristics emphasized by FFA members.

FFA Official Dress

Historically, the robed ceremonial outfit worn by FFA officers originated as part of public school graduation robes used in the 19th Century United States. Since 1936, the Blue Corduroy robed attire has served as both uniform and regalia, continuing to evolve over time. Today's official dress consists of black corduroy pants, a brown leather belt, white collared shirt, tie, vest, and sweater vested jacket. Members wear this attire at local, district, state, and national conferences, as well as other special occasions like banquets and award presentations.
