Study Notes
External Female Structures
- The external female reproductive organs are collectively called the Vulva
- Mons Pubis: Rounded, soft fullness over the symphysis pubis covered with pubic hair
- Labia Majora: Two fleshy folds extending from the mons pubis to the perineum, protecting the labia minora, urinary meatus, and vaginal introitus
- Labia Minora: Narrow folds located between the labia majora, pigmented, similar to vaginal mucosa
- Clitoris: Erectile organ highly sensitive to temperature, touch, and pressure
- Vestibule: Oval-shaped area between the labia minora, clitoris, and fourchette, containing the external urethral meatus, vaginal introitus, and Bartholin's glands
- Perineum: Posterior part of the external female reproductive organs extending from the fourchette to the anus, composed of fibrous and muscular tissues supporting pelvic structures
Internal Female Structures
- Vagina: Elastic fibro-muscular tube connecting the uterus to the vestibule
- Uterus: Hollow, pear-shaped muscular organ measuring 7.5 X 5 X 2.5 cm, normally anteverted and antiflexed
- Fallopian Tubes: Two tubes extending from the cornu of the uterus to the ovary, divided into:
- Interstitial part: Runs into the uterine cavity, between the fundus and body of the uterus, 1-2 cm long
- Isthmus: Narrow part adjacent to the uterus, 2-3 cm long
- Ampulla: Wider part, 5 cm long, where fertilization occurs
- Infundibulum: Funnel-shaped part with fimbriae (fingerlike processes) that help with ovum pickup
- Ovaries: Oval solid structures located on each side of the uterus, producing estrogen & progesterone and ova
Structure of the Ovaries
- Cortex: Outer layer
- Medulla: Inner layer
- Hilum: Area where blood vessels and nerves enter
Function of the Uterus
- Menstruation: Uterus sloughs off the endometrium
- Pregnancy: Uterus supports and allows fetus to grow
- Labor and Birth: Uterine muscles contract and cervix dilates to expel fetus
Function of the Vagina
- Allows discharge of menstrual flow
- Serves as female organ for intercourse
- Allows passage of the fetus from the uterus
Layers of the Uterus
- Perimetrium: Outer peritoneal layer
- Myometrium: Middle thick muscle layer with longitudinal, figure-8, and circular fibers
- Endometrium: Inner layer responsive to estrogen and progesterone, consisting of the compact, basal, and functional layers
Support Structures
- Bony Pelvis: Supports and protects the lower abdominal and internal reproductive organs
