Study Notes
5. 7 Feeling
- Sensory receptors are responsible for detecting the feelings described
- There are five key sensory receptors inside skin
- These sensory receptors are sensitive to:
- Touch, described as a light stroke or tap
- Pressure, described as heavy touch
- Temperature, hot or cold
- Pain when something is damaging tissue
- A sensory receptor for light touch is located near the surface of the skin
- The sensory receptor for pressure, heavy touch, lies much deeper inside the skin
The Nervous System
- Fingertips have many different sensory receptors, these include those for pain, touch, and temperature
- The fingertips can tell whether something is hard, soft, sharp, rough, smooth, hot, or cold
- Lips contain sensory receptors for pressure, pain, and temperature
- Lips can detect a kiss and whether something is too hot to eat or drink
- Skin, internal organs, and muscles contain many types of sensory receptors
Layers of Skin
- In addition to detecting stimuli, skin protects the body
- Skin is tough and stretchy
- Skin has three main layers
- The epidermis is the top layer and is what you see
- The dermis is the second layer and is quite thick
- Subcutaneous fat is the bottom layer
- The epidermis produces new skin cells, gives skin its color, and protects your body
- A lot happens in the dermis; it produces sweat, grows hair, makes oil, and brings blood to your skin
- Dermis is the layer that contains sensory receptors and nerve endings
- A special type of sensory receptor is around hair roots in skin for detecting hair movement
- Dermis can detect when hair on the body or face is being touched
- Subcutaneous fat is a padding to protect muscles and bones from bumps and falls
- Subcutaneous fat controls body temperature
