Energy Storage
Energy Storage
Fats serve as a storage form of energy, offering more energy per gram than carbohydrates.
Insulation
Insulation
Fats help insulate the body, preventing heat loss and maintaining a stable internal temperature.

Fats: Essential Nutrients
- Fats are crucial for energy storage, insulation, protecting vital organs, providing essential fatty acids, and carrying fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K).
- Fats enhance the taste and palatability of food.
- Fats are solid at room temperature (fats), and liquid at room temperature (oils).
- Common types include triglycerides (simple lipids) and lipoproteins (compound lipids).
- Lipoproteins are combinations of lipids and proteins that transport fats through the bloodstream, carrying triglycerides and cholesterol for digestion and absorption.
- Triglycerides are the most prevalent dietary fat, categorized into saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fats.
- Fats offer the most concentrated energy source of any nutrient, three times more than carbohydrates.
- Fats are more digestible than proteins and carbohydrates, making them useful for increasing the calorie density of foods.
Fat Deficiency
- Fat deficiency can impact wound healing, leading to compromised skin health and potential infections.
- Improper coat condition may also result, and this can relate to poor wound healing, infections and skin conditions (scaly skin).
Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs)
- Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are essential because the body cannot produce them; they must be obtained from the diet. Omega-9s can be produced in the body.
- Essential Fatty Acids include:
- Linoleic acid (Omega-6): critical for cats and dogs. Sources include vegetable oils, pork fat, and poultry. Deficiency can cause poor hair, weight loss, and weakened immunity.
- Alpha-linolenic acid (Omega-3): vital for cats and dogs. Found in fish and fish oils, supporting retinal and nervous system development.
- Arachidonic acid (Omega-6): essential for cats, and dogs can convert from linoleic acid but can't synthesize this acid themselves, only found in animal fats. Deficiency can affect reproduction and growth in cats.
