J.C. Daniel: The Pioneer of Malayalam Cinema

  • J.C. Daniel is considered the father of Malayalam cinema.
  • He was born on November 28, 1900, in Agasteeswaram taluk of Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu.
  • Daniel made the first film in Kerala, titled "Vigathakumaran" (The Lost Child), which reflected the social and cultural life of the period.
  • He faced many difficulties in making the film but eventually set up the first film studio in Kerala, "The Travancore National Pictures", in 1926.
  • He wrote the script, directed, acted, and edited the film himself.
  • The film was a silent film and starred P.K. Rosie, an ordinary woman from the exploited class of society.
  • Despite his efforts, the film failed commercially.
