Fantasy Story Types & Structure

• The file speaks about the types and structure of fantasy stories and provides examples
• The objective of the slides is to aid students in understanding direct and indirect sentences, spelling, punctuation, and the author's ideas or views from the fantasy narrative text presented

Types of Fantasy Stories

• Fantasy stories are categorized based on their story setting into three types
• The three types are cross-time settings in the past, contemporary or futuristic

Nataga si Ekor Biru (Nataga the Blue Tail)

• In Tana Modo, Nataga divides tasks among commanders and troops, as wolf-like creatures emerge from the fog
• With Dewi Kabut's encouragement, Nataga uses tail-based fire to overwhelm the wolves
• Levo, Goros, Lamia, Sikka and Mora salute Nataga after the battle

Anak Rembulan (Negeri Misteri di Balik Pohon Kenari) Anak Rembulan (Moon Child (Mystery Land Behind the Walnut Tree) Moon Child)

• Nono visits Mbah Sastro in Wlingi and helps Mbah Mas at a food stall
• While buying fried tofu in Njari, Nono stops by a walnut tree and encounters Trimo
• The story transports Nono to the Dutch colonial era
• Nono meets historical/mythical figures and faces Sri Ratu

Fantasy Story Types Based on Compatibility in Real Life

• Based on compatibility with real life, fantasy stories come in two categories namely:
  • Total Fantasy
  • Partial Fantasy (slice)

Total Fantasy

• Total fantasy stories contain the author's fantasy regarding an object or certain instances
• Everything in the category does not happen in the real world
• The names of people, objects, and cities are entirely created by the author

Partial Fantasy

• Partial fantasy stories express fantasy but still use names from real life
• They use place names that exist in the real world or events that have occurred in the real world

Structure of Fantasy Stories

• Fantasy stories have a familiar structure of:
  • Orientation/Introduction
  • Conflict
  • Resolution
  • Ending

Orientation/Introduction

• Orientation is the introductory stage in the story, starting from the theme, characters, and plot
• The character's traits are normally told within the introductory section
• An example is "Once upon a time, there was a widow who did not have a child named MboSrini. While going to the forest, she was visited by a giant. The giant said that it will gave her a cucumber. After sometime, the vines bared one golden fruit. She cut it open and was shocked to find a baby girl inside. The girl was then named Timun Mas"

Complication

• It contains conflicts facing the characters. Conflicts are at the core of the fantasy story
• An example is: "To a long story short, Timun Mas was grown. She dreamt of giants coming to get her a week later. Srini was afrraid, then looked for a shaman to help protect her. The shaman gave her four bag of cucumber seeds, needles, salt and shrimp paste"

Resolution

• In this section, a way out of the problems faced by the character is presented
• At these point, the overall problem will start to subdue
• An example is "On the day that was already said, Mbok Srini told Timun to go. The giant started the pursuit. With the first bag, she throw cucumber seeds to the lands. It turn out that it stop the giant progress. As she being chased, she thew the second bag. In just a short while, the seeds sprouted into bamboo forest. As she keep running, she thew the third bag. The lants turn into the ocean. Being exhausted, she thew the fourth seed that turn the land into a mud. The giant fell into it and perished"

Ending/Closing

• An ending is the final part of the story. It is usually divided into two categories
  • Happy ending: the main character is happy and lives a happy life
  • Sad ending: main character dies after achieving their goal
