Famous Jamaican Scientists
- Thomas Philip Lecky (1904-1994): Developed new cattle breeds suitable for Jamaican climate. His research at the University of Edinburgh focused on manipulating cattle species through natural selection and mutation. Awarded a PhD in Agriculture in 1951. Developed the "Jamaica Hope" dairy cattle breed, a combination of British Jersey, Holstein, and Indian Sahiwal cattle, resistant to diseases and suited to warm climates. Later created "Jamaica Red" and "Jamaica Black" cattle breeds.
- Cicely Delphine Williams (1893-1992): Pioneer physician specializing in nutrition, paediatrics, and maternal care. Known for discovering kwashiorkor, an acute form of malnutrition. One of the first women to study medicine at Oxford. Worked in the Gold Coast (Ghana), and later as an adviser for maternal and child health at the World Health Organization (WHO).
- Manley Elisha West (1929-2012): Pioneer pharmacologist. Developed Canasol, an eye drop medication from cannabis, for treating glaucoma. Awaitded the Order of Merit by the Jamaican Government.
- Louis Grant (1913-1993): Interntionally acclaimed Pathologist and Microbiologist. Researcher of Dengue fever and the Aedes Aegypti mosquito. Worked to establish the Foundation for International Self Help Development (FISH) providing affordable medical assistance.
- Paula Tennant (1967-present): First Caribbean person to bioengineer a papaya resistant to the Papaya Ringspot Virus (PRSV), creating the Jamaica Solo Sunrise. Studied at the University of the West Indies, Mona, and Cornell University. Recipient of a PhD.
- Joel Sadler (1985-present): Human Augmentation Engineer. Co-inventor of the JaipurKnee, a low-cost prosthetic knee joint. Studied at MIT and Stanford. Received a bronze medal from the Institute of Jamaica.
