Family
- A family is a group of people related by blood, marriage, or adoption living together, or two or more people who live in the same household, share a common emotional bond, and perform certain interrelated social tasks.
- Family of orientation is the family one is born into and raised in.
- Family of procreation is the family one creates by getting married and having children.
Types of families
- Childfree or childless family: Two people living together without children.
- Cohabitation family: Couples, possibly with children, who live together but remain unmarried.
- Nuclear family: Composed of two parents and children.
- Extended (multigenerational) family: Nuclear family plus grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, and grandchildren.
- Binuclear family: A family created by divorce or separation when the child is raised in two families.
- Communal family: A group of people who choose to live together as an extended family, often with social or religious motivations.
- Gay or Lesbian (LGBT) Families: Individuals of the same sex live together as partners for companionship, financial security, and sexual fulfillment.
Reproductive Development
- Sex is determined at the moment of conception.
- Gonads (ovaries and testes) produce sex cells.
- During the fifth week of fetal development, primitive gonads form.
- Both sexes have two undifferentiated ducts: the mesonephric (Wolffian) duct and the paramesonephric (Mullerian) duct.
- During the seventh and eighth weeks in males, gonadal tissue differentiates into primitive testes and begins the formation of testosterone.
- Testosterone influences the mesonephric duct to develop into male reproductive organs, while the paramesonephric duct regresses.
